There is a lesson to be learnt here: what is trash to you may be gold to someone else. A BPO unit that shut down its shutters gave out the computers to the recycle unit. The call center made this wise move thinking that they did not want their old computers and monitors to be used as land fill. As it is, disposing the computers and other digital equipment in the trash is against the law.
However, very few companies, let along BPO service units, actually go to any lengths to get their old equipments discharged for recycling. The gesture of this answering service unit will be like a trendsetter for many such companies in the future. The business process outsourcing industry is committed to the preservation of the environment and it won’t stay away from any move that is a step towards going green.
The BPO unit dumped some 150 desktop units along with 85 monitors. The monitors of the call center are the old CRT ones. It’s obvious then that the monitors will contain lead in high quantities. With the correct treatment, the monitors of the answering service unit can be converted into something that can be used.
Other call centers who are thinking of dumping their equipments, be it computers or monitors or any other kind of equipment, must look out for a recyclable dealer and hand over the material to them. If the expanding business process outsourcing industry responds to measures supporting the environment, it will look great on the social commitment meter!
